To call Claroscuro quirky would cheapen its ultimate range, and while its title refers to contrasts of light and dark, the truth is that Matus don’t even make it as simple throughout these eight tracks as pitting one side against another. Instead, they gracefully set a multitude of elements in motion and then skillfully direct the listener along a guided path between and through them. If this really is their final album — and somehow I doubt it will be; creativity like this doesn’t just stop — then it’s a bigger loss than most will realize.

JJ Koczan - The Obelisk

This Peruvian psychedelic rock band has been in existence for the past 10 years and this, their fifth LP, may just be their tour de force. Combining heavy Black Sabbath-y riffs with oddball instrumentation like theremin, pastoral acoustic passages, and—at times—heartful bluesy vocals. They embody a decades-long tradition of South American rock styles, blending Anglo influences with a mystical native sensibility that sounds familiar and exotic at the same time. There's word that this might be their final opus, I hope more people outside of a specialized niche get a chance to discover one of Peru's greatest natural resources.

Do you need old ‘n’ good catchy doom rock hits with passionate vocal lines? Here you get the amazing songs “Umbral” and “Mio es el Mañana”. Want some dreamy acoustic tunes? Then you have the beautiful ballad “Firmamento”. If you search for retro hard rock stuff, then check the songs “Rompecorazones – Jenizaro” and “Hada Morgana”. Also, there are two specific interludes, “Crisalida” and “Bizarro Cabaret”, with female vocals and some hypnotic jazz rock arrangements.

This album is a dense, heavy, earth-shuddering expression of the trippier side of alternative. I really love how the sound engineering exemplifies the massive reverberating guitar chords and subterranean rumbling bass; in a droning, shoegazing way, the effervescent sound waves linger in the air, encompassing your brain in a thick aural miasma that's simultaneously crunchy and dreamlike.
